Why is this? At 5:38 AM/EDT on Monday, October 6, 1997, from launch complex # 40 at the Cape Canaveral Air Station, a spacecraft called Cassini is scheduled to liftoff. On board Cassini will be 72.3 pounds of the deadliest substance known, Plutonium (Pu). Inhaling less than 27 millionths of a gram of Pu will give you lung cancer. NASA’s own odds state there is a 1 in 345 probability for a release of Pu on this mission. There are 2.3 million people in the 6 county region surrounding the Cape. If there is a failure on liftoff (like the Challenger did at T+ 73 seconds) and the Pu is released, the prevailing winds in October are blowing right back over all these people. Worst case contamination clean up costs for this region run at 4.1 trillion dollars, it could be useless for 12,000 generations. All the affected people would have to be moved. Cassini is to use the 72.3 lbs. of Pu not as a fuel to propel it, but to power (by the heat given off during radioactive decay) 3 Lockheed-Martin built radiosotope thermal generators that will create the modest 745 watts of electricity, to run all of the onboard instruments and experiments. This modest generation of 745 watts of electricity, can now be done in deep space conditions (Saturn is 794 million miles from Earth), by using a combination of advanced photovoltaics (solar power) and long lived fuel cells. Physicist Dr, Carla Signorini of the European Space Agency (ESA) stated on 4/29/94 that “If given the contract to do the work, within 5 years the ESA could have solar cells ready to power a space mission to Saturn.” Why isn’t NASA willing to use the safe way, using a solar fuel cell redesign? Cassini is a 3.4 billion dollar 11 year mission that is to explore Saturn and one of its satillites, Titan. After a hopefully successful launch, to get out to Saturn (the on board rockets doesn’t have the thrust), Cassini must use a maneuver called the gravity assist swingby (GAS). This maneuver is accomplished by flying very cose to a planet and using that’s planets gravitational field to transfer some of its energy to the spacecraft, which then enables the spacecraft to increase its volocity tremendously. This GAS maneuver will be used 4 times, on 8/16/99 Cassini will swingby Earth at an altitude of only 310 miles, and traveling at 711.666 miles per minute (please visit our web site at www.lovearth.org and read the article called Gambling With The Devil). If something goes wrong and Cassini inadvertly reenters our atmosphere the extreme 3000 degree plus temperatures will vaporize Cassini and the 72.3 lbs. of pu will be released, possibily causing tens of millions of premature deaths, mostly from cancers.
